My Russian girlfriends in France complain that their European boyfriends rarely give them flowers. In Russia, flower traditions are still powerful. On the street, you can often see a man carrying a bouquet of roses on his way to a date. Flowers are often brought to birthdays or without any special occasion, when people are invited to somebody’s place. Bouquets accompany proposals or apologies. The busiest time for Russian florists are the 8th of March (International Women’s day) and the 14th of February (Saint-Valentine).

Personally, I like having flowers at home from time to time. But for me they are not a compulsory ingredient of a relationship. Flowers are just an exterior symbol, what’s inside a relationship is more important. Nevertheless, today I’d like to tell about a set of rules related to good flower etiquette in Russia. Please, share your experience in the comments. What flower rules exist in your country?

1. If you are giving a bouquet of the same flowers, like roses, the number of flowers should be odd (3, 5, 25). Bouquets with an even number are usually brought to funerals. However, I’ve read that two flowers are also possible, but only when given to a lover. If the bouquet contains many different types of flowers, there is a little chance the receiver will count them all.

2. The colour is also important. The red is associated with passion. Red bouquets are given to lovers and artists. It is traditional to compliment young women with closed buds of pastel colours. Shades of orange are the most generic, they can be given to friends. The white, however, can be associated with illness and death, better to avoid giving white flowers to the elderly and sick.

3. Not sure all Russians are aware of these subtleties, but still… If flowers are wrapped in protecting paper, then, before entering the house, either unwrap the bouquet completely, either show its top to make the flowers visible. When entering the flat, the gentleman must hold flowers in his left hand. Just before giving them, he must transfer them into his right hand.

4. If you come as a heterosexual couple bringing flowers for the hostess, then women have to great each other first. Then it’s the man who presents the bouquet. If flowers are brought for a young woman with her mother living in the same place, then the mother must also be given flowers (I find this one quite funny).

5. A woman can give flowers to a man if they have a big age difference. But if he is married, better to give them to his wife. If you are going to an elderly person’s birthday, try to find out about their favourite flowers in advance. Elderly people can also be given flowers in a pot, if the giver is sure the receiver likes them.

If you received flowers, you must put them into a vase straight away to make them well visible. I guess it’s the same rule everywhere. Anyway, the most important thing here is to make the host happy with beautiful flowers, don’t take all these rules too seriously.
