Have you heard of the Hermitage Museum, the biggest picture gallery in the world? About masterpieces by Rembrandt, Titian, impressionists? Today we will have a look at eight interesting facts about Hermitage.

1. Название «Эрмитаж» происходит от французского слова «ermitage », то есть «уединённое место». Первая коллекция Екатерины Второй находилась в уединённом флигеле дворца.

1. The name “Hermitage” comes from the French word “ermitage”, meaning “a place for retreat”. The first collection of Catherine II was situated in a remote wing of her palace.

2. До 1852 года, когда Эрмитаж стал публичным музеем, посещали его только члены императорской семьи и близкие к ним люди. Пушкин смог посетить музей только благодаря своему другу, поэту Жуковскому.

2. Before 1852, when Hermitage became a public museum, it was reserved to the imperial family and people close to them. Pushkin were only able to visit the museum thanks to his friend, the poet Zhukovsky.

3. Чтобы посмотреть все 3 000 000 экспонатов Эрмитажа, потратив на каждый по одной минуте, вам нужно будет около 11 лет. При этом вы должны будете проводить в музее по 8 часов в день.

3. Seeing the 3 million exhibits of Hermitage would take us 11 years, supposing we would spend one minute in front of each of them for 8 hours a day.

5. Hermitage is home to about seventy official “museum cats”. Cats were initially brought there by Catherine the Great to protect the palace from mice and rats. 7. Hermitage doesn’t only exhibit paintings. We can also find the mummy of the Egyptian priest Pa-di-iest, a 2000-deck cards collection, as well as an exhibit made of tattooed human skin.

8. Мы привыкли видеть Зимний Дворец нежно-зелёного цвета. Таким он стал только после Второй Мировой Войны. До этого Эрмитаж красили в красный, розовый и жёлтые цвета.

8. We are used to see the light-green Winter Palace. However, it only acquired this colour after the World War II. Before that Hermitage was painted in red, pink and yellow.
