1. Согласно легенде из «Летописи временных лет», город был основан тремя братьям из племени полян – Кием, Щеком и Хоривом и их сестрой Лыбедью. Название Киева происходит от имени Кия – старшего из трёх братьев.

1. According to the legend from the «Primary Chronicle», the city was founded by three brothers from the Polyan tribe – Kiy, Shchek and Khoryv and their sister Lybid. The name of Kyiv comes from the name of Kyi, the eldest of the three brothers.

2. Киев называют «городом каштанов», ведь цветущие каштановые деревья – символ украинской столицы. По словам историков, каштаны в Киеве появились ещё в XVII-XVIII веках.

3. Именно в Киеве находится самая глубокая станция метро. Речь идёт о станции «Арсенальная», глубиной в 105 метров. Станция была построена в 1960 году. Это станция «английского типа» с коротким средним залом. Она является памятником культурного наследия. Всего в Киеве построены три ветки метрополитена.

6. Андреевская церковь – редкий случай православного храма без колоколов. Этот храм находится на правом берегу Днепра, и по легенде, удар колокола в храме затопит прилегающие к нему земли.

6. St. Andrew’s Church – a rare case of an Orthodox church without bells. This temple is located on the right bank of the Dnieper, and according to legend, the sound of a bell in the temple will flood the adjacent lands.

7. А ещё в Киеве существует храм на воде. Церковь Николая Чудотворца стоит на Днепре у набережной Подола. К счастью, чтобы посетить эту церковь, не обязательно уметь плавать. С берега к нему ведёт 15-метровый мостик.

7. Kyiv also boasts a church built on water. The Church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker stands on the Dnieper near the Podol embankment. Luckily, you don’t have to know how to swim to visit this church. A 15-meter bridge leads to it from the shore.

8. Древнейшей улицей Киева считается Владимирская. Говорят, что ей более 1000 лет. Самой широкой улицей в Киеве (и в Европе) является Крещатик, главная улица столицы. Самая длинная улица Киева – Броварской проспект (14 километров), а самая короткая улица – Инженерный переулок (менее 50 метров).

8. Vladimirskaya is considered to be the oldest street in Kyiv. It is said to be over 1000 years old. The widest street in Kyiv (and in Europe) is Khreshchatyk, the main street of the capital. The longest street in Kyiv is Brovarsky Prospekt (14 kilometers), and the shortest street is Inzhenerny Lane (less than 50 meters).

9. В Киеве можно посетить музей троллейбусного талончика. Там можно посмотреть на самую богатую в мире коллекцию проездных билетов. Кстати, именно Киев стал первым городом в Российской Империи, где был запущен электрический трамвай (1892 год).

9. In Kyiv, you can visit the trolleybus ticket museum. There you can look at the richest collection of transport tickets in the world. By the way, it was Kyiv that became the first city in the Russian Empire to launch an electric tram line (1892).

10. Киево-Печерская Лавра – это крупнейший монастырь в Европе. Она была основана в 1051 году преподобным Антонием. На территории в 22 гектара расположено около сотни различных зданий. А колокольня Лавры является самой высокой в Украине (96,5 метров).

10. Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra is the largest monastery in Europe. It was founded in 1051 by St. Anthony. On the territory of 22 hectares there are about a hundred different buildings. And the bell tower of the Lavra is the highest in Ukraine (96.5 meters).
